When Does Winter Park Resort Open for the Season?

Winter Park · Ski Season Guide

Winter Park Resort usually opens for skiing and riding in early-to-mid November, and in strong snow years it has opened as early as late October. Last season the lifts started on October 31, 2025. If you're planning a first-chair trip to the Fraser Valley, here's what to expect and how to time it.

When will Winter Park open for 2026–27?

There's no fixed date yet. As of early October, Winter Park Resort says it will open "as soon as possible" for the 2026–27 season. Opening day depends on early storms and how quickly crews can make snow.

Update · October 14, 2026

The first real snow of the season is falling

Colorado's high country picked up its first real snow of the season overnight and into today. Over at Arapahoe Basin, Al's Blog reports the season's first top-to-bottom snowfall. It's still a little too warm to make snow there, but temperatures are expected to drop around sunset, and A-Basin expects its snow guns to be running by tomorrow morning.

Winter Park should be right behind them. OpenSnow calls for a low of 24°F tonight with 1–3 inches of new snow, and about 5 inches over the next five days. That's cold enough for snowmaking, so we expect Winter Park's crews to start making snow tonight. With the new snowmaking system, a stretch of cold nights like this is exactly how a late-October opening happens.

New this winter: lifts start spinning at 8 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, an hour earlier than before. That's a nice bonus for weekend visitors trying to squeeze in extra runs.

For reference, the 2025–26 season ran from October 31, 2025 to April 19, 2026 on the Winter Park side.

When Winter Park has opened in recent seasons

Season Opening day Note
2025–26 October 31, 2025 Tied the record
2024–25 November 8, 2024
2023–24 November 3, 2023
2022–23 October 31, 2022 Earliest on record
2021–22 November 17, 2021
2020–21 December 3, 2020 COVID and wildfire delay

The typical window is the last day of October through mid-November. The one outlier, December 3, 2020, came from pandemic restrictions and the East Troublesome Fire, not a lack of snow.

Why Winter Park can open earlier now

Winter Park spent $37 million over two summers rebuilding its snowmaking system, its first major overhaul since the original system went in during the late 1970s. The new setup pumps up to 6,000 gallons of water a minute, more than double the old 2,400, through nearly 200 new snow guns, seven miles of new pipe and a 13-million-gallon reservoir.

That extra capacity lets crews take advantage of the first cold nights of fall instead of waiting on storms. It paid off in 2025–26, a rough snow year: Colorado's snowpack sat around 30% of normal by late March, yet Winter Park still opened October 31, tying its earliest opening ever. Even when Mother Nature is slow, early-season skiing at Winter Park is a much safer bet than it used to be.

What opening week actually looks like

Opening day is about first turns, not the full mountain. Winter Park starts with a handful of base-area lifts and runs built mostly on man-made snow. In 2023 it opened with 15 acres off Gemini Express; in 2024 it doubled that to 30 acres across five lifts, thanks to snowmaking upgrades.

Terrain grows week by week as storms roll in, and the mountain is usually in much fuller swing by the holidays. The Mary Jane side opens later than the Winter Park side, since its bumps and trees need natural snow. In 2024–25, after a snowy November that dropped more than 76 inches on the resort, Mary Jane opened December 6.

If you want first chair, come for the energy and the banner break. If you want variety, aim for mid-December onward.
